Dating In Germany Vs Usa
I'm an American girl studying in Berlin and through my conversations with some German guys, have begun to appreciate the differences in dating cultures of the two countries. However, upon further reflection, I actually have some more questions I never got the chance to ask.
I was told that most Germans don't do 'dates' and this seems to align with my experience. However, sometimes I get the feeling that I am actually on a 'date'; we're just not calling it one. For instance, a German guy asked me to go to the Christmas market with him. I said 'sure', then asked if a mutual friend could come along. He said that wasn't what he had in mind and he'd rather just hang out with me (among other signs of interest). So how do you know you're on a 'date'? This all started because he's a friendly acquaintance. We were in a seminar together and since I hadn't seen him in a month I asked if he wanted to grab dinner and catch up. It's perfectly normal for me to eat out with guy friends one on one and casual/innocuous suggestion on my part, but I wonder if I'd inadvertently signaled romantic intent instead.
I've also been told that unlike Americans, Germans don't generally 'date around'. Which made me pause, as that's exactly what I'd been doing up to that point. So if you don't generally date around, and then you go out with an American who does, do you consider that cheating? (I told the aforementioned guy at one point I'd seen four guys at once-nonsexually, but still, he looked mortified)
Do you find that some Americans send the wrong social signals? I've been taught to always be friendly and accommodating, and to give compliments whenever I see the opportunity to guys and girls alike. But I swear complimented a German guy and weirdness ensued.
- Dating often includes hand holding and kissing, and for many couples, extends into a sexual relationship as well. It is common, in today’s world of dating, that to date someone means you are also sleeping with them. To date and not have a physical relationship of any sort is almost unheard of. Courtship is the polar opposite.
- We invited our friends and special guests to join us and talk about the differences we notice when it comes to dating and relationships in Germany and Americ.
- Answer (1 of 12): What I've observed living in the US and Germany for many years: Dating culture in the US: 1. Two people meet (at a bar, party, school, work, online dating), and get to know each other (years, months, days, hours, minutes, a few messages).

Please enlighten this poor ignorant American (plus introverted. Nerdy. Socially oblivious). I think I've made enough mistakes here already.

Edit: I'm not replying here to be defensive... As it happens learning different cultures and norms is highly fascinating to me, so just sharing a bit of my own cultural assumptions.
